This work consists of two resembling images with different histories. One is a digital print of a detail from a scanned reproduction of Ingre’s 1908 oil portrait of Francois Marius Granet while the other is a digital print of a 1930 scanned snapshot of an Istanbul lady. I question issues about gender identification and gender confusion. I find it paradoxical that these images resemble one another. With this work I point out that trying to be someone we are not, trying to become western when we are not, imitating the ‘other’, trying to be masculine when we are not, trying to fit into an alien environment, only brings sadness and melancholy and confusion.
