I grew up during the 1950/60s in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, USA, before migrating to Istanbul, Turkey, in 1969. A couple years ago at the ballet in Istanbul, I met Gerald Frakes, a Professor of Medieval Literature from the University of California. During our conversation I learned that he plays blue grass music. I mentioned that my grandfather, John Rector, had also been a bluegrass fiddler. When he heard my grandfather’s name, he said, “Incredible! He’s my idol!” A few months later he sent me a recording of my grandfather’s music made in the 1930s. I’ve used this music in this very personal video work.

In today’s transient enigmatic yet global world, traces of existence and connections, can emerge at anytime and at any place. We may live many different lives within our short lifetime, but the past is always within us…or something like that.
