The artist’s older granddaughter remembers being insecure in crowds and at parties where she clung to her grandmother like a little koala bear.  But, from the baby koala bear’s face, we can see uncertainty as if she senses the risk of being smothered.  Children need to feel secure, but also to have self-confidence and freedom to make their own choices. For women in a patriarchic system realization of this threat can perhaps help to protect them against the domination of fathers and husbands and to comprehend false societal promises fed to them in fairy tales and seemingly innocent subconscious messages.
