In Melancholy (2004), Atakan photographed her close colleagues Gül Ilgaz and Gülçin Aksoy during a visit to Pierre Loti, on a day when they were feeling sad. The artist transferred her friend’s images onto fabric before joining them with colorful fabric strips. Reminiscent of the effort required to build and sustain friendships, feelings of isolation and loneliness disappear by stitching the fabrics together.
