As the US and England invaded Iraq, I became obsessed with images of war that I found in seemingly benign places. For the first time, I purchased toy tanks, soldiers, guns (things forbidden to my own children) from shops lining the route between the Egyptian market and the covered bazaar. Why do adults make tanks and guns for children? Why do we want children to play war garmes? What psychological messages do games convey?

During the 23 of April, 2003, Children’s holiday festivities, I observed and filmed parents and children interacting in an Istanbul park. For this digital film, I combined footage taken that day of attractive park rides and children with those of war toys placed among flowers or on rocks. Why would an adult name a children’s park ride “Terminator”? What are we teaching children by giving aggressive names to pleasurable park rides? Our actions and resulting messages may not be as innocent as they appear at first glance.
