Life is precious, Life is short
tree branch, two antiqued change purses, 8 canvas origami shapes, thread

In this wall sculpture, Atakan uses symbolism to invite us to take a minute in the midst of the hustle of their ever transforming contemporary Capitalist lives, to remember that life is short, time is precious, change is constant.  Eight origami butterflies flutter on and two antiquated coin purses dangle from a pruned and polished tree branch. Weak branches pruned from trees in the fall encourage foliage to flourish in the spring. Objects become redundant. Short lived butterflies symbolize spiritual transformation and remind us that life is short, but full of beauty. The title of the work, a Turkish saying ‘vakit nakittir’, means life is precious and every minute should be valued like any form of currency.
